Imperial Austria

The Imperial traditions of Austria are well preserved and provide visitors with compelling reasons to spend a little time in and around Vienna.

On offer are a number of well preserved and celebrated royal palaces belonging to the Royal court including the HofBurg, the Schönbrunn Palace and the Festival Palace Hof.

These palaces were used for both official and private occasions by the Habsburgs.

The Schönbrunn Palace

Imperial Austria

Attracting around 5.2 million visitors every year, the Schönbrunn Palace is today listed as a World Heritage site based on its importance as an historical palace and Baroque architecture. This palace became the summer residence of the Habsburgs under the Empress Maria Theresa. Also famous for its parks and gardens, the palace itself allows you to visit the lavish and richly appointed Royal apartments.

CURRENT EXHIBITIONS:
During 2009 there are a number of special exhibitions on display at the Schönbrunn Palace.

Schönbrunn Palace is currently exhibiting the carriages, clothes and curios of the Empress Elisabeth of Austria. This exhibition continues until the 31 December 2009.

Vienna Hofburg

This palatial complex was both the winter residence of the Habsburgs and the political heart of the Austrian Monarchy until 1918. It was here where the Congress of Vienna met between September 1814 through to June 1815, to create a new political landscape in Europe following Napoleon's defeat and 25 years of war.

Today it is the official residence of the President of Austria and is still used today by the famous Spanish Riding School.

Visitors to Hofburg can inspect the Imperial Silver Collection comprising of lavish dining services and centrepieces used in Imperial banquets. There are over 7 000 items displayed. The Sisi Museum dedicated to conveying insights into the private and public life of Empress Elisabeth and, the Imperial Apartments - some 19 rooms occupied by Emperor Franz Joseph and Elisabeth. These are authentically furnished throughout.

Festival Palace Hof

Sited on the outskirts of Vienna on 50 hectares of land stands the Hof Castle complex which was the country estate of the Habsburgs. Of particular note and fame are the gardens which have been excavated and restored. The extensive gardens created by Lucas von Hildebrandt consisted of pavilions, fountains and gardens covering seven terraces along the banks of the March River.

Open daily between April to October visitors can view the royal apartments in the baroque castle, the gardens and the manor farm.
