One of the oldest cities in the Middle East, Muscat began as a fishing village. Later invaded and occupied by the Portuguese for over 100 years and visited by Vasco da Gama, Muscat became an important hub between the Persian Gulf and India. Muscat was essentially a trading city with slaves, pearls, dates, frankincense and fish some of the main commodities and today, oil. This commercial heritage is reflected today in the famous Muttrah Souks, the traditions and hospitality of modern Oman.
