Cappadocia

Within the heart of Turkey lies the region of Cappadocia, in the vicinity of Göreme and Avanos. The result of volcanic activity, Cappadocia is distinctive for it’s conical, pointed, columnar or mushroom-shaped rock formations known as “fairy chimneys.”

First settled in Neolithic times, this region had strategic importance as a trade route.

The Heart of Turkey

Cappadocia has attracted a succession of invasions beginning with the Assyrians who introduced cuneiform writing seen today in Cappadocian tablets, followed by the Hittites, Phrygians, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks and Ottomans who all left their influences.

Over time local inhabitants developed dwellings and indeed whole subterranean cities, within the distinctive rock formations that were often concealed against raiders and looters.

Later Islamic influences led to a flourishing of arts, trade, philosophers, architecture and a rich Anatolian cultural life.

Today the Cappadocian region has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
