The Heart of Turkey

Cappadocia has attracted a succession of invasions beginning with the Assyrians who introduced cuneiform writing seen today in Cappadocian tablets, followed by the Hittites, Phrygians, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks and Ottomans who all left their influences.
Over time local inhabitants developed dwellings and indeed whole subterranean cities, within the distinctive rock formations that were often concealed against raiders and looters.
Later Islamic influences led to a flourishing of arts, trade, philosophers, architecture and a rich Anatolian cultural life. |
Today the Cappadocian region has been designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. |
