Troy

With a history of 4 000 years, Troy, 30 kms from the Dardenelles was founded in 3000BC. It was subsequently demolished and reconstructed 9 times and played a highly significant part in the development of European culture, merging the Anatolian and Mediterranean cultures.
The siege of Troy by Spartan and Achaean warriors from Greece described by Homer in the Iliad, took place during the seventh re-building of Troy, with the Trojan War in the years of 1200BC. The city fell and Troy was burnt and destroyed, only to be rebuilt again during the Hellenistic period which attracted pilgrims as well as tourists wanting to find reminders of the Trojan War. A later version of Troy followed during the Roman period with city features such as a water supply system, public baths and places of entertainment, until around 500AD. Troy's significance lies in the interaction between the Mycenaeans, trading partners but later enemies, and it's allies to the east, the Hittites. |
An intrigue of both fact and fiction, the Trojan War may have caught Troy between two competing powers, the Mycenaeans and the Hittites. |
In modern times it has become a famous, significant archaeological site particularly with the work of Heinrich Schliemann from 1870 who undertook early excavations.
